Thornleigh Community Baptist Church
Thornleigh Community Baptist Church had out grown their church facilities and spent some years having activities in a local school hall. They had land available but it also included a large heritage listed house that needed to remain. The land was surrounded by houses in a residential area which meant solutions were also needed to acoustic and parking constraints.
Design Solution
The facility that was designed by Aibee Architects integrated a large auditorium with a capacity for 550 people onto the existing heritage residence. The design allowed for the existing residence to be used for the church administration and also included toilets, a kitchen and a specialist area for creche and playgroups. Work also included rectification work to the residence and its front garden to restore its appeal.
The end result was such a success that Hornsby Shire Council awarded the project a Heritage Award in 2000.
Client Comment
Aibee Architects of Thornleigh were contracted to plan and supervise our new building. This had to be wedded to a building built in 1894 which had been modified several times through its life. The end result proved to be all that we could have wished and more. It has brought favourable comments from casual observers as well as the whole congregation.
We can now use both the old building and the new in very creative ways. The new building seats more than 550 people and is suitable for multipurpose use. The appearance both inside and outside is both pleasing and all that we had hoped.
I commend the planning and supervision by the architects most heartily.
