Cherrybrook Uniting Church
The Cherrybrook-West Pennant Hills Uniting Church congregation results from the merging of two churches. This merger increased attendance and with their desire to reach young families there was a need for a larger hall, meeting rooms and modern facilities.
The congregation value their identity as a community-oriented church. They are proud of its historic character and its high visibility in the community. The church, chapel and surrounding cemetery are heritage listed so a design that complemented these buildings as well as linking the new facilities as part of one building was desired.
Design Solution
Aibee Architects liaised with Hornsby Council’s Heritage Committee to design a building which attached lightly to the existing building and provided a lightweight foyer to emphasise the heritage church and cemetery. The building was also designed to minimise impact to the significant trees covering the site.
Aibee Architects designed a new hall, meeting rooms, toilets, kitchen and foyer attached to the rear of the existing church and reorientated the church so that it is accessed from the opposite end. The new facilities provide a safe and accessible entry foyer facing New Line Road which links the existing church and new facilities.
