Cedars Christian College
A school on a relatively new (and flood restricted) site in south-west Wollongong had been gradually expanding its facilities through the use of prefabricated buildings. However, its long term vision saw permanent buildings providing a wide range of educational facilities. Aibee Architects prepared an overall site master plan, input into modifications to the temporary buildings, and then designed the first major permanent building on site.
Design Solution
A two storey building in a highly visible location and linking site levels was developed in two stages. The ground floor (kitchen and workshop learning spaces and stores) was built first, with a concrete slab prepared to take the upper floor at a later stage. The master plan also called for new traffic circulation across the site, and access to the stores. The upper floor incorporates highly flexible general learning spaces. It was consciously designed to reflect the materials of the existing relocatables, while making a clear statement to the community of its permanence.
The building thus responds to its existing context, while giving a clear direction for the future development of the site. It acts as the catalyst for a fully permanent school complex in a growing area of the state.
